SCHOOL EVENTS/ACTIVITIES

Remembrance Week

As November is here, we are beginning our time of remembrance. As a school named after a veteran, Garth Webb, it is a special time of year for us. We take time to reflect on what we are grateful for and remember all of those who fought for our freedoms. Monday, November 11 is Remembrance Day and over the course of this coming week we will be doing activities and learning in our classes as it is such an integral part of our school. Take some time at home to talk about Remembrance Day, what it means to you, and the importance of being grateful for all we have.

Technological Design & Mohawk College

We recently received a very generous donation from Mohawk College! This past Friday, Tyler Sowden from Mohawk College's Building and Construction Sciences and Unmanned Remote Sensing Innovation Centre (URSIC) visited Garth Webb and donated several Leica Total Stations, Topcon data collectors, prisms, tripods, an automated level and accessories for use in our senior Technological Design and Energy, Engineering, and Robotics SHSM programs. In addition, Tyler arranged the gracious donation of a couple digital theodolites from an industry partner, John Martin. Thanks to Mohawk College and Tyler Sowden, our students can now learn and appreciate land surveying using modern instruments and through experiential learning, gain valuable insight into additional career pathways. Thank you Tyler and Mohawk College for donating these amazing tools and encouraging our students to learn about the field of surveying!

In our senior Technological Design program, students learn about land surveying and civil engineering. Using levels, theodolites and total stations, students obtain elevation and topographic data in and around the school that can then be imported into Computer Aided Design (CAD) for designing buildings, infrastructure and the landscape. We also offer elective certificates in Land Surveying to those students that are in our SHSM program.

As mentioned by Tyler and the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS), the surveying profession is in high demand and having to resort to high-tech solutions such as robotics and drone technology for the shortcomings in the current labour market. Surveying is a rewarding and highly-paid profession. If you like trigonometry, working with cutting edge technology like robotic total stations, GPS units, and drones, having the flexibility of working both in outdoor and office environments, surveying may be for you! It is an exciting and rewarding career! Mohawk College is a leading post-secondary institution offering students one of the most innovative labs in geomatics and surveying in Canada. Please contact Mr. Carrescia, P.Eng. for more information. We are grateful for Tyler and Mohawk College's continued partnership and support.

Entrepreneurs Within Conference

Garth Webb's Future Leaders Shine at 2nd Annual Entrepreneurs Within Conference

The spirit of innovation was on full display as students from Garth Webb Secondary School recently participated in the 2nd Annual Entrepreneurs Within Conference. This dynamic event provided an immersive experience, connecting our students directly with the vibrant local business community.

Throughout the day, attendees engaged with seasoned entrepreneurs, participated in hands-on workshops, and drew inspiration from insightful keynote speakers. The conference effectively demystified the journey from a simple idea to a viable business, giving students a practical roadmap for success.

A major highlight was the case study competition, where students collaborated in teams to tackle real-world business challenges. They showcased their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by developing innovative solutions and presenting them confidently to a panel of expert judges.

This conference was a powerful opportunity for asset-based learning, allowing students to build upon their existing strengths and connect classroom knowledge to practical applications. The lessons learned and connections made will undoubtedly enrich their environment back at school, with many now inspired to launch their own entrepreneurial ventures in the future.

Leaders League @ GWSS

Leader’s League Launches at Garth Webb!

We’re thrilled to kick off our 8-week Leader’s League Program at Garth Webb, an inspiring initiative led by Halton Multicultural Centre - Connections that focuses on developing leadership, communication, and team-building skills in a dynamic and inclusive environment.

As part of this exciting journey, students are working collaboratively on a very special legacy project: creating Garth Webb’s very own school mascot, brought to life through a stunning 3x3 two-dimensional paper mosaic board. Once complete, this artwork will be gifted to the school and proudly displayed in the library, portraying a lasting symbol of creativity, unity, and school spirit.

We can’t wait to see the incredible results from this passionate and dedicated group of future leaders!
