Mohawk Gardens Students & Families: We are so excited to welcome our students to an awesome year at Mohawk Gardens! Our staff have been busy preparing classrooms and our custodial staff have worked really hard to make the school clean and tidy for your arrival.
Class Assignments:
Classroom assignments will be emailed out on September 4th after 4 pm to families. Classes have been carefully and thoughtfully built by our educators. With the busyness of the first week, we will not be scheduling meetings about classroom changes. Please give your child time to get used to their classroom and encourage a growth mindset.
First Day!
Staff will be dressed in orange shirts and out on the pavement on Tuesday, September 8th between 8:15 and 8:30 with signs listing class codes. Please join the School Council under the tent for “Coffee & Kleenex.” Learn about the fabulous ways to get involved in the life of the school community.
School Hours:
Staff supervision does not start until 8:15 am so please do not drop students off earlier for their own safety. All students have academic learning from 8:30 am to 2:50 pm each day, including Kindergarten students (note there is no early dismissal for Kindergarten students).
Snacks & Lunches:
A friendly reminder that we are a nut-free environment. You will hear information in the coming weeks about pizza days, popcorn & cookie days, Lunchbox and the Breakfast Program starting dates. Stay tuned!
Parking Lot Reminders:
We encourage everyone to walk to school if they are able. If driving, do not use the east parking lot - this is for staff only. Families may use the west parking lot. If you are waiting with your child or they need an escort to their teacher, then park. If you are dropping off, then use the “Drop ’n Go” loop. Staff are not permitted to take your child out of the car or escort them to their line-up zone.
No Dogs on School Property:
We have a number of students and staff with allergies and anxiety around animals. Please keep all dogs off the blacktop and field where students are waiting for school to begin and stand in alternate municipal marked spaces if you need to bring a dog on your walk to school. The Kindergarten outdoor learning spaces (fenced-in area) are absolutely off bounds for dogs. Please help educate the public of this if you are by the school after hours. We want our learning spaces to be safe for our youngest students. Thank you.
Bikes and Electronic Wheels:
Students and families using bikes and electronic wheels to get to school must walk them while on school property to respect student walkers and their families and people with mobility concerns. The Municipality of Burlington states e-scooters are illegal on city sidewalks, public roads and pathways other than the pilot being tested currently on the Centennial Trail between Brant Street and Burloak Drive, including the Elgin Promenade. Riders must be at least 16 years old and those aged 16 to 18 must wear a helmet. Speed is capped (up to 24 km/hour) and double riding is banned.
Personal Electronic Devices:
If students are bringing personal devices such as cell phones and Smart watches to school to check in with parents for safe arrival purposes or for other reasons, please note that they must put them away in their backpacks when on school property.
Hearing and Vision Screening: September 23rd clinic at Mohawk Gardens
Deadline for registration is September 21st at 9am and the duration at the school may be adjusted based on student participation. Your child’s Hearing and Vision should be screened every year. A fee of $25.00 is collected to help offset the cost of bringing this clinic to your school.
Why Screening Matters:
-
Growing children are very susceptible to middle ear problems and one of the best ways to prevent hearing loss is early detection of middle ear function issues.
-
Vision issues are common in children, so early detection is crucial for their healthy development and academic success.
