Good Afternoon MSB Families,

Well Jays Fans, the Fall just isn’t the same without playoff baseball in Toronto.  That being said, we are off to a fantastic start and have really loved the weather.  We have done two of the three fire drills we need to complete by the end of Term One and students have been amazing.  Classes have been discussing Code of Conduct in our first month and we are excited to continue with our Growth Mindset work as a school.  If you would like more information on either please see the links below:

Growth Mindset

We are very proud of the work we do around Growth Mindset.  This looks like persistence in the face of “hard things” and believing we can all succeed.  This work is paramount to a strong sense of self.  We honour winners each month who have exemplified excellence in the skill we are looking at for the month during our Growth Mindset Assemblies.  This month the skill is Risk Taking.  Thank you to Mrs. Millers class for creating look-fors for our Kindergarten to Grade Three students and look-fors for our Grade Four to Grade Eights.  Our first assembly will be on Friday, October 30th.  Ask your child(ren) about the look-fors!

Lastly, a big thank you goes out to our community partner 70 Below for their generous donation of school supplies.  On behalf of the Staff and students, we thank you for your continued support.

NEW OFFERING:  ICE DAWGS are coming to MSB

New this year we will be offering students the opportunity to receive individually wrapped ice cream cookie sandwiches  from Terra Cotta Cookies the first Monday of every month.  Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards our Growth Mindset Initiatives. The cost will be $3.00 per Ice Dawg.  We will offer these 8 Mondays for a total cost of $24.00.

For those of you who have a Grade Four student that wrote EQAO last year, please be advised that the Individual Student Report (ISR) came home with your child last week.  If you have any questions in regards to how to interpret the report please feel free to reach out to the Office.

With Halloween approaching, we’d like to share how our school will be engaging and provide a few reminders to help make the day safe and enjoyable for everyone. MSB will again have a Costume Parade, Pumpkin Patch, Door Decorating and other activities. There is no expectation for your child to dress up in a costume. If your child chooses to dress in a costume, please help ensure their costume supports the positive and welcoming environment we strive for at our school.

Once again we will be very busy on October 30th, 2026.  The first event is our third annual pumpkin patch.  We will have four categories for our families to enter a pumpkin:

If your family would like to enter a pumpkin make sure you know which category you are going to enter.  Pumpkins can be dropped off on the morning of Friday, October 30th between 8:45-9:20am.  Pumpkins must be picked up by 4:15pm or they will be disposed of. We will be awarding one first place finish in each category and then an overall winner.  GOOD LUCK! 

Each class will also be creating a pumpkin during the day on October 30, 2026.  There will be one winner announced for K-3 and 4-8.  Big thank you to Sarah Brophy-Platts at Coldwell Banker Escarpment Realty for the donation of the classroom pumpkins.  

Lastly, we wish to remind families that we will again be having our costume parade.  Parents can enter the FRONT DOORS of MSB at 9:20am.  Remember that you cannot park in the bus lane as we do have buses.  The parade will begin at 9:40am.  

Community Partner: Georgetown Halloween Bike Ride

Join us for the 3rd annual spooktacular Halloween Costume Bike Parade on Saturday, October 17th @ 1:00pm. You are encouraged to dress up in your Halloween costumes, hop on your bikes and join the bike parade though Gellert Park. This event is meant to be fun for all ages. You don’t need to be a kid to dress up and join the parade. Decorate your bike too for added impact.

Prize categories include:

• -children up to and including grade 3
• -Grade 4 and older
• -Best Family

Of course there will be Halloween treats for everyone. And our Halloween-themed photo booth will be open for some memorable shots. 

This free event is organized by the volunteers at Halton Hills Active Transportation/Bike It Team

Be reminded that this is an important weekend to be with family and friends.  During this time many give thanks for the bonds we have formed.  On behalf of the staff, I would like to give thanks to you, our community.  This is truly the best school in Halton and we are thankful to build it with you.  Remember it is a four day weekend with Friday being a PA Day (no school) and Monday being Thanksgiving (no school).

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On September 30th, MSB recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. This is a dedicated time to pause, listen, reflect, and deepen our understanding of the tragic history and ongoing legacy of Canada’s residential school system.

Reconciliation begins with truth. It requires us to listen openly to the lived experiences and voices of Indigenous Survivors, families, and communities, acknowledging the intergenerational harm caused to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Commitment Across All Classes

Learning is an ongoing responsibility that belongs to every member of our school community. On September 30th, all classes across every grade level will participate in age-appropriate discussions, reflection activities, and educational readings centered around:

• Listening to Indigenous Voices: Engaging with stories, literature, and testimonies from Indigenous creators, Elders, and Survivors.

• Understanding History: Learning about the residential school system and the significance of Orange Shirt Day, inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story.

• Reflecting on Action: Discussing what meaningful reconciliation looks like in our daily lives, our school, and our broader community.

Wearing Orange on September 30th

We invite all students, teachers, and staff to wear an orange shirt on September 30th. Orange Shirt Day honors the children who survived residential schools and remembers those who never returned. Wearing orange is a visual commitment to the statement that Every Child Matters.

Ways to Continue Learning at Home

Reconciliation does not end when the school day finishes. We encourage families to continue these meaningful conversations together:

• Read books written by Indigenous authors that explore identity, culture, and resilience.

• Explore the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) educational resources and reports online.

• Visit local cultural centers, exhibitions, or community events dedicated to Indigenous heritage and reconciliation.

Another sign our school year has begun is the annual Acton Fall Fair which is occurring this weekend.  Some of our younger friends will be heading to the Fair on Friday.  We are really looking forward to this trip.  Please note that homeroom teachers will have sent home fall fair passes for all students.

From the desk of Mr. Brodie -- MSB goes to the Guelph Storm Game

On Sunday, October 4th, 2026 the MSB Choir will have the opportunity to sing O Canada on ice at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph prior to the Guelph Storm vs Kitchener Rangers game.  Puck drop is at 2:07 PM.  We are inviting all MSB families to purchase tickets to watch the Guelph Storm take on the Rangers that afternoon.

Tickets are only $20.00 per person (approx. 33% off the regular adult ticket price!). This event is a fundraiser for MSB and approx. $4.00 of your $20.00 ticket goes directly back to the school’s music program.  You’re welcome to bring friends and extended family members, too!

McKenzie-Smith Bennett is fortunate to have been adopted by the Guelph Storm Hockey Club and Guelph business community, issuing us 4 tickets to select Guelph Storm home games to pass on to MSB families for the 2026-27 season.

If you are interested in receiving a set of 4 tickets to a SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER Guelph Storm game, please complete the Google Form by the end of the school day on Tuesday, September 22nd.  A draw will occur for each game, and tickets will be sent home on Wednesday, September 23rd.

Open House/Movie Night

We are excited to invite you to the MSB Open House on Thursday, September 24th!

Come drop by anytime between 5:45 PM and 6:45 PM to tour the school, meet our staff, and explore what your students will be learning this year. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with the school community and see your child's learning space firsthand.

To make the evening extra easy and fun, we are offering a pizza dinner for families! You can pre-order pizza for your family to enjoy during the event. All proceeds from the pizza sales will go directly toward purchasing a movie night streaming license so we can host fun, school-wide movie events for our students later this year.

Parent Involvement Committee Information (PIC)

The HDSB Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) invites parents/guardians and community members to attend the upcoming Parent Involvement Committee Conference on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Elsie MacGill Secondary School in Milton.

The theme for this year’s event is Get Connected. Parents/guardians are invited to explore practical workshops on Student Mental Health and Well Being, Special Education, Generative AI and Social Media, Literacy, Mathematics, School Pathways, Equity and Inclusion. Come learn, connect and discover ways to support student success. Registration is now open for this free event, including childcare, a light lunch and transportation within Halton Region.

Halton Learning Foundation (HLF)

Help 400 HDSB Students Start School with Confidence

As students across our community head back to school, some will arrive without the basics they need: a backpack, school supplies, or even lunch. The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), thanks to our generous community, is here to help.

HLF launched its Back-to-School campaign, with the help of its cheerful helper, Carrie the Backpack, to support 400 HDSB students by September 30. Families are counting on this support, and HLF is asking our generous community to step in urgently so they can continue to say “YES” to every request for emergency support they receive.

Here's what one parent shared about what saying “YES” meant to her family:

“Just wanted to say how grateful I am for this support. I’m a single mom, and because of your help, I’m able to get what my daughter needs for back-to-school and food, and I’m so unbelievably grateful for the support.”

Thank you for safely using the Kiss N’ Ride in the morning.  We want to just remind all a few things about the morning drop off:

-please use the street to park if you need to assist your child out of the car and/or accompany your child into school.

-Kiss N’ Ride at the North parking lot is a continuously moving zone. We ask that you remain in the car while your children exit.

-do not have children exit the car until they get to the curve in the road by the kindergarten area.  We will have staff on duty to ensure your child(ren) are safe.

-please be patient. We ask that drivers remain in line while using the drop off zone.  Please do not pass as we do not want to incur any injuries.

-please do not use the designated accessible parking spots unless you have the proper identification.  We do have families that need those spots.

From the desk of Mr. Brodie -- MSB goes to the Guelph Storm Game

On Sunday, October 4th, 2026 the MSB Choir will have the opportunity to sing O Canada on ice at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph prior to the Guelph Storm vs Kitchener Rangers game.  Puck drop is at 2:07 PM.  We are inviting all MSB families to purchase tickets to watch the Guelph Storm take on the Rangers that afternoon.

Tickets are only $20.00 per person (approx. 33% off the regular adult ticket price!). This event is a fundraiser for MSB and approx. $4.00 of your $20.00 ticket goes directly back to the school’s music program.  You’re welcome to bring friends and extended family members, too!

NOTE: Choir members will receive a free ticket and be seated with their paying family members.

Open House/Movie Night

We are excited to invite you to the MSB Open House on Thursday, September 24th!

Come drop by anytime between 5:45 PM and 6:45 PM to tour the school, meet our staff, and explore what your students will be learning this year. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with the school community and see your child's learning space firsthand.

To make the evening extra easy and fun, we are offering a pizza dinner for families! You can pre-order pizza for your family to enjoy during the event. All proceeds from the pizza sales will go directly toward purchasing a movie night streaming license so we can host fun, school-wide movie events for our students later this year.

Details on how to place your pizza order will be sent out early next week.

Once you are done with your visit we will start the show!  We will have our first movie night begin at 6:45pm in the South Gym. Stay tuned for which movie we pick to show!

Message from HDSB Support Staff -- Child Youth Care-Practioners (CYC-P)

We would like to introduce our school’s Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYC-P): Michelle Crozier, and our School’s Social Worker(s) (SW): Sarah Bryson. Michelle and Sarah will be a part of the Limehouse community this year.

What is a CYC-P? CYC-Ps are an active and integral part of the school community, often participating in school-wide activities (e.g. well-being teams, youth engagement, parent/guardian/caregiver information sessions, etc.) with educators to enhance student well-being. Students receive mental health literacy and social-emotional learning while at school through the curriculum. As a complement to this learning, CYC-Ps promote mental health through sharing and co-leading  evidence-based social-emotional learning and activities to provide classwide programming. CYC-Ps are also part of response teams for all schools in the Halton District School Board (e.g. Traumatic Events Response Team, and suicide risk screening). 

How CYC-Ps can support students

Parents/guardians/caregivers may receive notification letters and updates throughout the school year about evidence-based social-emotional literacy materials shared in classrooms with CYC-Ps. CYC-Ps can also provide specific opportunities for students through small group or individual sessions focusing on psychoeducation, well-being and skill building. These sessions support students in reaching their goals. This is done in consultation with and consent from parents/guardians/caregivers. 

What is a Social Worker? Social Workers are an integral part of the school community.  Social Workers work together with students,  parents/caregivers, staff and community providers to help students feel well and have a positive school experience. Students learn ways to address their feelings and emotions through identity-affirming evidenced-based therapeutic interventions. Social Workers, like CYC-Ps, are also part of response teams for all schools in the HDSB. Access to a Social Worker is done through your child’s school with parent/guardian consent through the SRT process. Grade 7 and 8 students ( who are 12 years of age and older) can self-refer and receive individual psychotherapeutic support.

How can Social Workers support students? Social Workers use psychotherapeutic interventions to support students on a variety of issues. These interventions are evidence-based and are identity-affirming to ensure that students feel that their voice is being heard and validated. Some interventions used include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Social Workers and students work towards goal based outcomes.

Our teachers are just as excited to meet their new friends out back on Tuesday, September 08.  We will have plenty of staff with vests on to help guide you to the right spot.  We ask that parents help their children find their class line, have one last quick hug goodbye, and then move back beyond the pylon barriers.  This is to ensure the safe monitoring of all our students. 

Kindergarten students also known as Year One (JK) or Year Two students (SK) will meet in the North Kindergarten Pen.  

Grade 1-3(and some 4) will line up by the North Gym Door entrance. 

Grade 4-5 will line up by the middle/linc entrance 

Grade 5-8 will line up by the South Door entrance right near the Office.  

If you aren't sure of what this means, don't worry.  We will have signs up and people with vests will be able to help direct you.

We are hoping this small list below helps some families with their back-to-school planning.  Academic materials like pencils, erasers, and paper will be provided for all students.  For the first day, here are some items your child will need: 

-we have two nutrition breaks of 20 minutes for students to eat.  We ask parents to be mindful of allergies such as nuts when packing lunches.  We are a Nut-Free Zone

-a refillable water bottle

-pair of indoor and outdoor shoes

-a change of clothes for our younger students

-grade 4-8 students will have access to a locker.  Some may choose to use a lock.  Unfortunately, we will not be providing locks but families may choose to get one.  Teachers will ask students to give the code to them in case of emergency or the student accidently forgets their combination.

Cell Phone Use

The HDSB cell phone policy follows Provincial guidelines to keep personal mobile devices out of sight and on silent or powered off during instructional times.  If students need to communicate with their loved ones, they will be asked to come to the Office and we will help with this process.

We will be asking all students to store their mobile Device in their locker until dismissal.  If your child has a unique need to access their cell phone please call the Office. 

HDSB Secondary School Open House

On Saturday, September 26, 2026 the Halton District School Board will host a board-wide, interactive Open House at Craig Kielburger SS in Milton from 10:00am-3:00pm. 

This event is designed to help students in Grades 6-10 and their families explore the full range of opportunities available across our secondary schools, including programs and pathways, academics, athletics, clubs, community and support, and student life.
