We are so excited to announce that our Miyawaki Pocket Forest is in. Staff and students spent the day working with volunteers from Sustainable Milton to dig, plant and water the shrubs and trees of the forest. The joy, conversation and collaboration that happened was a joy to witness. We will continue to instill stewardship of this unique natural environment throughout the coming weeks and look forward to what the spring will bring.

HDSB Messaging Around Halloween Costumes 

Costumes that mimic the traditional attire of an ethnic, religious, racial or gender group/identity are inappropriate and unacceptable for Halloween at schools. This includes dressing in clothing of the opposite gender ‘in jest.’ Pretending to be a member of a group for ‘fun’ is evidence of cultural appropriation and sends the message that cultural attire is a ‘costume’ to be donned for entertainment purposes. If you choose to dress up in a costume for Halloween please ensure that you are contributing to the positive and prosocial climate that your school is cultivating around celebrating Halloween.  Please remember that Halloween costumes should not create fear or anxiety. As such, please ensure students do not bring replica weapons or scary masks to school. Thank you for your support of our students and families in Halton. 

Homestay Hosts Needed in Halton

Each year, the HDSB’s International Student Program (ISP) welcomes students into schools, and as a result, our programs benefit, our community benefits and local students create lifelong friendships and global connections. 

Our Homestay Partners are looking for hosts for 2027 for various lengths of time: 3 months, 5 months (one semester) and 10 months (full year). They offer full training, 24/7 support and a monthly stipend.

Hosting an international student is a unique and rewarding experience. You'll give a young learner a life-changing opportunity while creating lasting memories for your own family. As a host, you provide a private bedroom, three daily meals, access to WiFi and laundry and a welcoming, supportive and safe home.

Popcorn Day is back! We will have Popcorn day every Thursday. The first term will run from November 12th to December 17th (6 Weeks).  You can now purchase through School Cash online with it closing November 2nd. No late orders or refunds will be accepted.  Popcorn will be delivered to classes during the first nutrition break. We have 2 tasty flavors to choose from – Lightly Salted or Sweet & Salty. Each bag costs $2.25.

Proceeds will be used to support extra curricular clubs, enhance the student learning environment, to support increased student engagement, student resources and initiatives.

Kindergarten Open Houses

Starting Kindergarten is a big milestone, and the Halton District School Board (HDSB) wants to ensure families feel prepared and excited as they set their children on the path to lifelong learning and success. Families with children who will be starting Kindergarten in September 2027 are invited to attend the HDSB’s Calling All Three-Year-Olds Kindergarten Open Houses this October and November in Burlington, Oakville, Georgetown, Milton and Acton. 

Registration for the Open Houses is not required. Future students and their families are invited to attend any of the following Kindergarten Open House events, to be held between 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

• Milton: Oct. 28, 2026 – Cedar Ridge Public School (815 Kennedy Cir, Milton)
• Acton: Nov. 4, 2026 – McKenzie-Smith Bennett School (69 Acton Blvd, Acton)

The Open Houses provide families with an opportunity to explore and familiarize themselves with the HDSB school environment and help their children feel comfortable, confident and ready to begin their educational journey. At the Open House, attendees will:

• Explore Kindergarten classrooms
• Meet and connect with HDSB staff 
• Learn about how the HDSB’s Kindergarten program establishes a strong foundation for learning and success in the early years
• Pick up information, a free children's book and a tote bag
• Access information from community partners in Halton
• Receive information about before and after school care

The learning continued here at Boyne as did the fun. Our girls and boys volleyball season is well underway with both teams winning games. Our Senior Flag Football team also had a tournament this week and played well and ranked 4th in their division.  

We are still awaiting delivery of plants for our Miyawaki (pocket) forest and will update you regarding progress in the coming weeks.

Navatri and Durga Puja 

This past week and in the coming week, a number of families at Boyne are celebrating Navratri, a significant Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil by honoring the divine feminine power, or Shakti.  During this time many people engage in fasting and religious reflection.  The festival also includes lively communal activities such as garba and dandiya raas dances, as well as traditional feasting. Durga Puja will also begin this Saturday, October 17th and continue to October 21st. We wish all those who celebrate Navratri and Durga Puja all the best during this time of celebration and reflection.

Fire Drill and Lockdown Practice Information

Over the past few weeks we have successfully engaged in a number of fire drills. In the coming week we will be conducting a lockdown practice. These practices are an important part of proactively ensuring the safety of all students.  While our staff discusses the importance of these practice sessions with students,  conversations at home also support student understanding of why we participate in fire drills and lockdown practice.

School Council Meeting Elections - Monday, October 19th at 6:30 pm

We are very much looking forward to the School Council meeting on Monday, October 19th.  We will finalize the School Council Election.  We are resending the self-nomination form for whether you would like to be a voting member or a member of the School Council Executive. We have extended the nomination process to Sunday evening in order to gain additional participants (Form linked here School Council Self-Nomination). Also at this meeting we will be discussing, among other things, fundraising allocation and upcoming school events.  We look forward to meeting with you on Monday at 6:30 pm in the school library.

Milton Elections

The following information is shared on behalf of the Town of Milton, which oversees the administration of municipal elections in Milton. 

Milton’s Municipal Elections take place on Monday, Oct. 26th. Eligible voters can cast their ballot during advance voting from Oct. 12 to 15 or on Election Day. Visit milton.ca/your-government/elections/2026-municipal-election for voting locations, hours eligibility requirements and other election information. Have your say by voting for the Mayor, Regional and Local Councillors and School Board Trustees.

School Bus Rules: No Eating or Drinking on the School Bus

To ensure a safe, clean, and comfortable ride for all students, we would like to remind all families that eating and drinking are strictly prohibited on the school bus at all times (water is permitted).

This policy protects student safety for several critical reasons:

• Choking Risk: Vehicle movement, bumps, and sudden stops while eating increase the risk of choking.

• Severe Allergies: Food consumption or leftover crumbs can cause life-threatening allergic reactions for fellow passengers.

• Bus Cleanliness: Spills and trash create unsanitary conditions, odors, and pest issues.

• Driver Focus: Food-related incidents and cleanups divert the driver’s attention from the road.

Please remind your child to finish all food and snacks before boarding the bus and save any further eating for school or home. Thank you for your cooperation!

School Bus Safety & Parent/Guardian Responsibilities (JK – Grade 2)

Ensuring the safety of our youngest riders is a shared responsibility. In accordance with HSTS Procedure HS-2-001 (Accompanying JK/SK Students To/From the Bus Stop), parents/guardians play a critical role in keeping students safe throughout their daily commute.

Please review the specific guidelines below based on your child’s grade level.

Kindergarten (JK / SK) Responsibilities

Parents/guardians of Kindergarten students must:

• Meet at the Bus Door: Always meet your child directly at the door of the school bus upon arrival.

• Confirm Safety Tags: Ensure your child’s backpack has a yellow happy face safety tag attached. This tag allows bus drivers to easily identify students who must be met by an adult.

• Establish Contingency Plans: Have an alternate arrangement ready for unplanned delays, such as traffic or appointments.

• Teach Key Safety Rules: Ensure your child understands that they should:

• Only get off the bus at their designated stop.

• Immediately tell the bus driver if they do not see their parent or designated supervisor at the stop.

Grade 1 & Grade 2 Reminders

Students in Grades 1 and 2 are not provided safety tags and are not flagged as "must be met."  To support their transition and safety, families should ensure their child knows:

• Their specific designated bus stop.

• The importance of spotting their parent/guardian or trusted adult before stepping off the bus.

• To inform the bus driver immediately if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable exiting the bus for any reason.

We encourage all families to watch Buzzy the Bee’s Safety Video together with their children for interactive, family-friendly safety tips.

Our students are continuing to learn and achieve in all of our classes while accessing extracurricular activities such as flag football, and volleyball. 

In addition, learning opportunities around Boyne’s first Miyawaki Forest along with tree planting are underway. Our Grade 7 students began researching natural forests last spring led by Mr. Roland McDougall and their work is continuing this year. The ground has been prepped and we are awaiting delivery of trees and shrubs that are Indigenous to the area so that we can have our very own Miyawaki forest here at Boyne. We are grateful to the efforts of Mrs. Romita Chatrath who worked to secure funding through a Tree Canada Grant. Stay tuned for updates.

Pediculosis (Head Lice) Information

     A number of times each year, schools share information about pediculosis (head lice) with families.  This information is not being provided because the school has a specific concern, but rather as part of ensuring all families have access to up to date and accurate information. It is very important that parents/caregivers check their children’s heads once a week for head lice. Do not wait for itchiness as a sign of head lice. Children can have head lice for many weeks before they feel itchy. 

     Head lice have nothing to do with lack of cleanliness – anyone can get head lice. They are a nuisance, but they do not cause illness. Head lice are not a public health problem because they do not transmit disease.

You know you have head lice if you see: 

● Live head lice: 

• Are greyish, six-legged insects that are 2 mm – 4 mm in length (as adults) 
• Can be difficult to see because they move quickly on the scalp 

● Head lice eggs: 

• Are very small – about half the size of a pinhead 
• Can be whitish-grey, tan or yellow in colour 
• Are glued to the hair shaft less than ½ inch away from the scalp 
• Can take about 7 - 10 days to hatch 

If at any time your child has a confirmed case of head lice, please inform the school, so we can take appropriate actions that ensure privacy for all.

This week we recognized the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Many staff and students commemorated the day by wearing orange. Students engaged in learning about the history and impact of residential schools as well as the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Our students also participated in the Amos Cross Country Meet and performed so well. It was a great day to see our students come together to support one another and represent Boyne by Working Hard, Being Kind and Making a Difference. They have so much to be proud of.

2026/27 School Council

We would like to thank those who came to our first School Council meeting of the year on Monday, September 28th.  Being a member of School Council is a great way to learn more about the school and to work in partnership with the Boyne  team.  If you are interested in being a voting member and/or an executive member, please fill in the School Council Self-Nomination form.  Self-nominations are due by 4 pm on Monday, October 9th.  We are looking forward to collaborating with families as part of this important advisory and school involvement body. Our elections will take place on Monday, October 19th at 6:30 pm in the school library.

Women’s History Month

October is Women’s History Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the women and girls from our past and our present, who are contributing to a better, more inclusive Canada.  In 1992, the Government of Canada designated October as Women’s History Month, marking the beginning of an annual celebration of the outstanding achievements of women and girls throughout Canada’s history.  Women’s History Month is also an opportunity to reflect on the work still ahead to remove barriers so everyone can participate fully in Canada’s social, cultural, and economic life.

Islamic Heritage Month

In 2007, the federal government of Canada declared October as Canadian Islamic Heritage Month.  In 2016, the government of Ontario, “... recognized and affirmed the important contributions that Muslims make in Ontario as part of the vibrant social, economic, political and cultural fabric of our province. As you know, one of the great strengths of the Boyne community is our tremendous diversity and the inclusive nature of our students, staff and families.  

Custodial Workers Recognition Day

This past Friday was Custodial Workers Recognition Day.  At Boyne we are incredibly fortunate to work alongside an amazing group of dedicated and caring custodial and cleaning staff.  The team of Ms. Zaporeta, Mrs. Bristow, Mr. D’Orio and Mr. Sandoval are led by Mr. Antoniuk,and they ensure the school is safe and clean each and every day!  We want to take this opportunity to thank them for their commitment to creating and maintaining a beautiful and functional learning environment for our students, staff and families!

Calling all Three-Year Olds! Kindergarten Open Houses

Beginning school is an exciting step for children and their parents/guardians. This fall, the Halton District School Board (HDSB) is hosting Calling All Three-Year Olds Kindergarten Open Houses to answer questions families may have and help future students feel comfortable and confident as they start their educational journey.

Incoming students and their families will be able to visit a kindergarten classroom, meet with community partners, and learn more about the kindergarten program at the HDSB. All events run from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Reorganization - September 28th First Day of New Classes

As we mentioned last week, reorganization of classes was a possibility and we have in fact been directed to reorganize classes by the school board in order to ensure we are meeting the primary class size cap mandated by the Ministry of Education.  If your child is moving classes you would have received communication by the end of the day on Thursday September 23rd..  If you have not heard from us,  your child will not be changing classes.  We recognize that many students do not want to change classes, however, please know that we carefully consider class changes and work to maximize student achievement for all.  The first day of the new classes will be on Monday, September 28th.  We thank you in advance for your understanding and we appreciate your flexibility as we finalized our school reorganization to keep in line with Ministry Guidelines around class sizes. We understand that transitions can bring mixed emotions, but please rest assured that our team is working closely together to make this move as seamless and positive as possible.

National Day of Truth & Reconciliation

September 30th is the annual National Day for Truth & Reconciliation in Canada.  This is a day to recognize the children who never returned home from residential schools and the Survivors impacted by residential schools.  During this important day, we also  recognize the work and recommendations of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission in Canada. Please take a moment to watch this incredibly impactful video clip. 

September 30th is also Orange Shirt Day, a day inspired by the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad. Phyllis was a student at St. Joseph Mission Residential School in Williams Lake, B.C. To recognize the importance of this day and build understanding about the lasting impact of Residential Schools CDR students have been and will be engaging in a variety of learning experiences.  Please join CDR students and the Halton District School Board in recognizing the harm the residential school system did to the identity, self-esteem, and well-being of First Nations, Métis, Inuit children and communities and show that everyone around us matters as we move towards truth and reconciliation.  On September 30th students, staff and families are encouraged to show their support and solidarity by wearing orange.

Parent Volunteering Opportunity!

Are you a parent who is interested in sharing some of your time and caring nature with Boyne students?  If so, you are exactly who we are looking for!

This is a call out for any parents of Boyne students who are interested in volunteering in the school with our young learners.  We are looking for parents to help primary students with printing, reading, and basic math. This is during school hours under the supervision of our Boyne teaching staff; they will prepare all the student schedules and learning materials.  All you have to do is show up with enthusiasm and a great big smile!

The minimum time commitment required is twice a month for approximately 1-1.5 hours each time.  However, you can come more than twice a month if that is your interest.

You don’t need any special training, but you will need to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check, which we can help you organize.

This volunteering program will start after Thanksgiving.

It was so lovely meeting our families and students at Open House yesterday. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year together. 

Reorganization

Each September, the school board reviews class sizes across the region as they work to ensure primary class size caps are in place and junior/intermediate class size averages meet the standard.  In order to ensure class sizes that are appropriate and in compliance with the rules, fall re-organization is a reality in many schools.  With the very strong registrations we’ve had at Boyne, we may be directed to re-organize in the next couple of weeks.  If we do need to re-organize, please know that just like in the spring, student moves and placements are done with the input of educators and admin in order to minimize movements and maximize success for all students.

Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur is the holiest day in Judaism. It occurs annually on the 10th of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar. Primarily centred on atonement and repentance, the day's observances consist of full fasting accompanied by intensive prayer as well as sin confessions (traditionally inside of a synagogue). Alongside the related holiday of  Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur is one of the two components of the "High Holy Days" of Judaism.

Franco-Ontarian Day   

Each September 25th, people across the province recognize Franco-Ontarian day.  This day and the raising of the Franco-Ontarian flag is an opportunity to recognize the over 600 000 Francophone Ontarians and the other 1.5 million people in Ontario who also speak the French language.  As a school we are proud to recognize the important contributions of Francophones in Ontario and celebrate the culture and learning that the French language brings to Boyne and the province.

International Week of the Deaf

The International Week of the Deaf takes place around the world in the last week of September every year. During this week, organizations around the world host events to celebrate how people who are deaf or hard of hearing contribute to their communities. Moreover, the week also raises awareness about the rights of people who are deaf.  As part of a diverse community at Boyne, we are pleased to recognize the important contributions of people who are deaf or hard of hearing around the world, but also in our community, in our school and in our classrooms!

Terry Fox Run/Walk

The annual Terry Fox event at Boyne will happen on Friday, September 25th.  Terry Fox is a Canadian hero who set out to do his part to raise money in support of cancer research.  Terry started his “Marathon of Hope” with the goal of running across the country and raising $1 for every Canadian.  To date the Terry Fox foundation has raised more than $850 million dollars to fight cancer.  We encourage families to make a donation of $2.00 or more for this important fundraising effort.  To donate, please visit the Boyne donation page hosted by the Terry Fox foundation by clicking this link.

Help 400 HDSB Students Start School with Confidence

As students across our community head back to school, some will arrive without the basics they need: a backpack, school supplies, or even lunch. The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), thanks to our generous community, is here to help.

 HLF kicked off Back To School, with the help of our cheerful helper Carrie the Backpack, to help 400 HDSB students by September 30. Families are counting on this support, and HLF is asking our generous community to step in urgently so they can continue to say “YES” to every request for emergency support they receive.

 Here's what one parent shared about what saying “YES” meant to her family:

 “Just wanted to say how grateful I am for this support. I’m a single mom, and because of your help, I’m able to get what my daughter needs for back-to-school and food, and I’m so unbelievably grateful for the support.”

Parent Involvement Committee

The HDSB is looking for parents/guardians to join the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC). PIC supports, encourages, and enhances parental engagement at the Board level to improve student achievement and well being. In the past, PIC has focused on a well attended parent conference covering a wide range of subjects, as well as parent information evenings.

 As a member of the Parent Involvement Committee, we achieve our purpose by communicating with and supporting school councils, undertaking activities to help parents/guardians support their children’s learning, and providing information and advice on parent engagement to the HDSB. PIC members commit to participating in four public meetings per year, some planning meetings, and possibly committee work. 

 This year, we are appointing three new members from the following areas: 

 Halton Hills: one elementary or secondary representative

• Milton: one elementary or secondary representative

• Oakville: one elementary representative

Neurodiversity Symposium

Event: Learning Together: A Neurodiversity Symposium

Host: Centre for Diverse Learners

• Virtual Learning Series (Sept 21–25): Lunch & Learns and evening workshops featuring 8 guest speakers sharing practical, evidence-informed strategies to support neurodiverse learners.
• In-Person Open House (Sept 25, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM): "Open Minds & Open Doors" at 560 Guelph Line, Burlington, Ontario. Includes classroom tours, student projects, community displays, and networking.

Food Orders

Pizza lunch is back! We will have Pizza day every Wednesday. The first term will run from October 7th -November 4th.

You can now purchase through School Cash online with it closing September 30th at 10:00am.  No late orders will be accepted.

Pizza will be delivered to classes during the second nutrition break. There will be no holds on pizza if the student is away. Each slice of Pizza costs $3.50

Proceeds will be used to support extra curricular clubs, enhance the student learning environment, to support increased student engagement, student resources and initiatives.

School Cash Online

All financial transactions are done through School Cash Online. This includes transactions for trips, pizza days and other school functions. We no longer accept cash at the school. If you are not signed up for School cash online sign up forms will be sent home next week through your classroom. Please note you will require your Student Number (without the leading zeros) to sign up.

It has been wonderful to welcome our students and families back to school. Inches in height have been gained, teeth have been lost and with all the growth that has happened over the summer we are excited to help them continue to grow academically this school year. 

Creating an Inclusive Space for Learning at Boyne

As you are likely already aware, the key words for Boyne are Work Hard, Be Nice, Make a Difference.  As part of our work to create a sense of BELONGING, you will notice the newsletter will often include information about days of particular religious or cultural significance, as well as other important days of observance.  We believe it is important to recognize these moments in the lives of our students and families.  

Rosh Hashanah

This weekend a number of families at Boyne will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah.  Rosh Hashanah, the celebration of the Jewish new year 5786, begins on Friday. This multi-day holiday commemorates the beginning of the universe. It is observed with special worship services and the sounding of the shofar, an instrument made of a ram's horn, on both mornings of the holiday.  We hope that families who recognize this new year celebration enjoy this sacred time with friends and family.

Song Requests

As we continue to build a sense of BELONGING at Boyne and enrich our school culture. We would like to have students start the day, prior to announcements, with a school appropriate song that sets the mood for the day but also reflects them, their culture, their identity and their musical preferences.  Please enter your song request in the google form linked here.

Allergies 

As we kick off the new school year, creating a safe and inclusive environment for all our students is a top priority. Several children in our school community have severe, potentially life-threatening food allergies—most notably to peanuts and tree nuts. To help keep these students safe, our school maintains a nut-aware policy, and we kindly ask that you do not send snacks or lunches containing peanuts or tree nuts (including nut butters, granola bars with nuts, and hazelnut spreads).

In addition to our school-wide nut safety guidelines, individual classrooms may have specific restrictions based on the unique dietary needs of students in that particular room (such as dairy, egg, or sesame allergies). Your child’s classroom teacher will communicate directly with you regarding any specific classroom-only food restrictions. We ask that you double-check ingredient labels before packing daily lunches, or snacks. Thank you for your support, vigilance, and cooperation in keeping all of our students healthy and safe!

Traveling To & From School

We would like to thank families for your support in ensuring that the school and surrounding community are safe for all students and families. We know that school drop off and pick-up are busy times for everyone. It is only by working together that we can keep our students safe.  

Reminders:

• The parking lot is reserved for Boyne staff
• The East side of Farmstead is a no stopping zone an dcrossing from this location is very dangerous due to car, and bus traffic.  Should you need to cross from the East side of Farmstead please use the crosswalk South of the parking lot entry.
• If you need to drive in the morning or at the end of the day, please be advised that there are many streets in the community that permit short term parking.  Many of these locations are between a 1 and 5 minute walk from the school.  Please ensure that you are not blocking residents' driveways.

Electric Scooters

The number of e-scooters in operation continues to rise locally, and with it – the risks of serious injury if involved in a collision or other mishap. Electric scooters are prohibited on all HDSB school sidewalks, playgrounds and within school buildings. E-scooters are not permitted to be stored in school 

School Council

Please join us for School Council meetings, which take place a number of times each year on Mondays at 6:30 pm. Council is an important way to learn more about the school and have a voice in important matters impacting the school and community.  If you are interested in being a part of the council, please share your information by clicking here.  Our first meeting will be on September 28th at 6:30pm
