We are also thrilled to hear that the Groundhog has predicted an early spring! While we await the warmer temperature, the weather remains cold for now. Please continue to ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather so they can stay comfortable while playing outside.

Have a great weekend.

Despite the loss, our Coyotes advance to the Halton Semi-Finals at Bruce Trail Public School in Milton on Tuesday.

Junior Choir

After School Pick-Up Safety Reminder

Student safety is always our top priority, especially at dismissal time. We would like to remind families that there are several designated options for picking up your child after school: the blacktop area, the large parking lot, and the upper city parking lot.

For everyone’s safety, please do not stop on Sutton Drive at any point to pick up or drop off students. Stopping on the street creates unsafe conditions for students, families, buses, and other drivers. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep dismissal safe and smooth for all members of our school community.

Police Record Check (PRC) Update for Volunteers – Effective April 1, 2026

In December 2025, the Ontario Ministry of Education introduced amendments to Police Record Check requirements under Ontario Regulation 298/25, effective April 1, 2026. As a result, school boards are now required to obtain a new Police Record Check (PRC) for all school volunteers every five years. A new PRC will also be required if there has been a lapse in submitting the Annual Offence Declaration.

These updated requirements apply to both current and new volunteers and are part of ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. We sincerely appreciate the time and care our volunteers bring to our school community. Your involvement makes a meaningful difference, and we look forward to welcoming both returning and new volunteers. Learn more about the updated PRC requirements for volunteers and how to get involved in our school community by visiting the Volunteer in HDSB Schools webpage on the HDSB website (hdsb.ca).

We hope that you all continue your journeys in volleyball. Go Coyotes!

Jr. Boys Volleyball Tournament

Last night the Jr. Boys’ Volleyball Team played in their final tournament of the season at Palermo. Our Coyotes finished in third-place in round-robin play, winning 3 out of 6 of their games. The boys continued to work hard, demonstrate great skills, and outstanding teamwork in the quarter-finals. Despite a slow start against their Arch Rivals of Sutton Drive, John William Boich, the team battled hard and

clawed their way back into the match. In the end, our Coyotes were victorious, setting up a semi-final matchup with Heritage Glen. The boys got off to a blazing start and never looked back, cruising their way to victory, beating the Huskies 25-14. Our Coyotes would take on first-place King’s Road in the finals. The team gave it their all but came up short, losing to the extremely talented Warriors 25-16. Congratulations to all players on a great season, which also included a second-place finish at the Boich tournament in February. A huge shoutout to all players - Avery, Caleb, Chayton, Dustin, Filip, Grayson, Jonah, Josh, Max, Nolan, Owen M., Owen P., Ramez, Reyansh, Rhys & Theo.

News from 4/5-1

Our Grade 4/5 classrooms transformed into high-tech labs this week as students mastered micro:bit coding! They successfully programmed these pocket-sized computers to act as digital thermometers—complete with custom animations and musical chimes—and utilized built-in accelerometers to create "shake-to-roll" digital dice. By turning complex logic into tangible tools, the students explored the intersection of math, physics, and creative design, proving that coding is as much about problem-solving as it is about digital creativity.

The highlight of the week was a "Demo Day" where our coders welcomed Mrs. Baker’s Grade 2 class for a collaborative workshop. The older students took on the role of mentors, proudly demonstrating their creations and then guiding their younger "learning buddies" through the basics of the MakeCode interface. Seeing the Grade 4/5s explain concepts like sensors and inputs to their buddies was a heartening display of leadership, leaving both classes inspired by the power of digital making. Save the date - June 4

Please save the date for our highly anticipated Spring Concert on June 4! We are thrilled to showcase the hard work of our talented students with both an afternoon and an evening performance. The showcase will feature our primary and junior choirs as well as our various bands, and we are truly looking forward to sharing this musical celebration with our community.

Late Arrivals:

Punctuality is vital for student success at ALX, as the instructional day begins promptly at 9:00 AM. While occasional absences for illness or appointments are understandable, frequent lateness disrupts the learning environment and hinders academic progress for both the individual and the entire class. To ensure a productive new term, we ask for your cooperation in getting students to school on time and ready to learn without the distractions caused by late arrivals.

Earth Hour

This Saturday , March 28th is Earth Hour.  We invite you and your family to join people around the world by turning off your lights for one hour to support our planet.  Make it a special time with your children -play a game, tell stories or take a walk around the neighborhood.  Let's make a difference together.

Great Job with the Great Gulp

On March 27, 2026, the students and staff of Alexander’s Public School gathered together in the gym to participate in the Great Gulp, raising our reusable bottles in unison to celebrate water as our most precious resource. This collective "gulp" served as a powerful reminder of the importance of staying hydrated and our school's ongoing commitment to reducing plastic waste by choosing tap water. It was a fantastic moment of community spirit that highlighted how simple, daily habits can contribute to a healthier planet.

April is HLF Month at Alexander’s!

This April, Alexander’s Public School is proud to support the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), an organization dedicated to eliminating barriers to education for students across the Halton District School Board.

Why HLF Matters

HLF provides emergency financial support for HDSB students, ensuring they have access to the basic necessities required for learning—whether that is nutritious food, proper clothing, or essential learning tools. Their goal is to always be able to say "yes" to a student in need.

Our Student Council Fundraiser: The "Pie-in-the-Face" Challenge!

To celebrate HLF month, our Student Council is launching a fun, high-stakes fundraiser! Throughout the month of April, classes will be competing to see who can raise the most for HLF.

The winning classes will earn the ultimate prize: the opportunity to "Pie-in-the-Face" a staff member! We are thrilled (and perhaps a little nervous) to announce that several staff members have volunteered, including our very own Principal, Mrs. Sherwood!

How You Can Support

All proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to HLF to support students in our community. You can make your contribution quickly and easily through the School Cash Online donation portal.

Let’s work together to remove barriers to learning while having some "messy" fun in the process!

To learn more about how your donations change lives, visit haltonlearningfoundation.ca or watch this short video to see HLF’s impact in action.

Congratulations to our Student of Excellence

Rylie Overend is a truly outstanding student who exemplifies excellence in both character and commitment. She is consistently kind, respectful, and polite, and she goes out of her way to help others whenever needed. Rylie is highly involved in school life, participating in multiple teams, band, and various clubs, and she serves as one of the school’s well-being leads, where she plays an active role in supporting a positive, inclusive school environment. Academically, Rylie is a conscientious and hardworking student who consistently performs at a high level and takes great pride in her learning. Her strong work ethic, leadership, and genuine care for others make her an exceptional role model and a very deserving recipient of the HDSB Student of Excellence Award at ALX.

Music at ALX

We have some upcoming fantastic musical opportunities. On June 4, we will be performing our spring concert with many talented musical groups, including the primary and junior choirs, a junior band, jazz band and concert band. There will be 2 performances, 1 school time concert and 1 evening concert. On June 10, the 3 bands will be wrapping up their music year by going to Canada's Wonderland to perform for adjudicators. Feel free to contact Teacher Lane if you have any questions.

Thank you for supporting ALX!

We are incredibly grateful for our community’s generous ,fundraising efforts which have directly funded several vital initiatives across our school. Thanks to your support, our Playground Activity Leaders in School (PALS) program is now fully equipped with new balls, bean bags, hula hoops, chalk, and pinnies, allowing our Junior students to develop leadership skills while helping younger students build cooperative play habits during nutrition breaks. Beyond the playground, your contributions have funded the new LEGO wall in the library—a massive hit with students—as well as innovative STEAM resources like Micro:bits and Climate Action bits. (You can also see this YouTube video, which highlights the micro:bits: https://youtu.be/iFki86qpxTY?si=2no5DEy0nbJUwQME). Furthermore, we are excited to announce that fundraising is partially covering our upcoming visit from Chef à l’École! This interactive, hands-on program will bring French-language learning to life through the art of baking for our Core French and French Immersion students in Grades 4 to 8. Thank you for providing the resources our students need to lead, create, and grow in such engaging ways.

Class Building Considerations for 2026-27 School Year

At ALX, administration, classroom teachers, and the Special Education team invest significant time and care into building classes for the upcoming school year. To assist in this complex decision-making process, we utilize various sources of data with a primary focus on creating balanced environments based on learning styles, gender equity, academic needs, and peer compatibility. Please be aware that due to declining enrollment, classes will most likely be structured as combined grades next year, which results in minimal options for specific student placement.

While our staff's daily knowledge of your children is our primary guide, we value the opportunity for families to share their thoughts on the learning environment that best fits their child’s needs. If you would like to provide feedback for consideration, please complete the placement  FORM by May 22nd, after which responses will be closed. We ask that you submit a separate form for each child and refrain from requesting specific teachers. Please keep in mind that while all requests are thoughtfully considered, final placement decisions are multifaceted and cannot be guaranteed.

Spring Clothing Drive

This April, Alexander’s Public School is proud to support the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), an organization dedicated to eliminating barriers to education for students across the Halton District School Board.

Why HLF Matters

HLF provides emergency financial support for HDSB students, ensuring they have access to the basic necessities required for learning—whether that is nutritious food, proper clothing, or essential learning tools. Their goal is to always be able to say "yes" to a student in need.

It’s Spring! And you know what that means… spring cleaning!

Student Council is organizing a clothing drive in support of The Compassion Society of Burlington. We will be collecting spring and summer clothing from Monday, April 13th to Friday, May 1st.

This initiative is also part of our April HLF challenge. To celebrate, the Student Council is launching a fun “Pie-in-the-Face” fundraiser in support of Halton Learning Foundation. Classes will compete to raise funds throughout the month, with the top class earning the chance to pie a staff member—including our Principal, Mrs. Sherwood!

All proceeds support students in our community. Donations can be made through School Cash Online and used clothing will be collected and counted by Student Council members.

The ALX Student Council thanks you kindly for your generosity and support!

Upcoming EQAO Assessments

Our Grade 3 and Grade 6 students will soon be participating in the provincial EQAO assessment, which evaluates fundamental skills in Mathematics and Language. This year, the ALX assessment is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, and Wednesday, June 3. We kindly ask that you bookmark these dates on your calendar and make every effort to avoid scheduling appointments, vacations, or other planned absences during this window. We sincerely thank you for your cooperation in keeping these dates open so that our students are able to attend and complete the assessment on the designated dates.

Friday, April 17, 2026

It finally feels like spring has arrived at ALX!  Let’s hope it stays this way!   It has been wonderful to see our students enjoying the beautiful weather during recess and outdoor activities this week.

The highlight of our week was undoubtedly the Chef à l’École program. Our students in Grades 4 to 7 had a fantastic time honing their culinary skills, practicing their French, and, of course, enjoying some delicious treats. It was a wonderful blend of culture, language, and hands-on learning that brought a lot of "joie de vivre" to our halls.

Read on to catch up on other important school updates!

Have a great weekend.

Homestay Hosts Needed in Halton

Each year, the HDSB’s International Student Program (ISP) welcomes students into schools, and as a result, our programs benefit, our community benefits and local students create lifelong friendships and global connections. Canada Homestay Network (CHN) is currently looking for hosts in Halton for international students joining the HDSB during the 2026-2027 school year.

The HDSB has received a strong number of applications for the 2026-2027 school year, including several students who will be staying for a shorter period of approximately three to four months. This creates a great opportunity for families who may be interested in short-term hosting.

Hosting an international student is a unique and rewarding experience. You'll give a young learner a life-changing opportunity while creating lasting memories for your own family. As a host, you provide a private bedroom, three daily meals, access to WiFi and laundry and a welcoming, supportive and safe home. CHN offers full training, 24/7 support and a monthly stipend.

CHN will be hosting two virtual information sessions for families interested in learning more about becoming a homestay host:

For more information about becoming a host for an international student, please visit the Become a Homestay Host webpage of the HDSB website (hdsb.ca) or contact hostinfo@canadahomestaynetwork.ca, call 1-877-441-4443 or visit: https://whyihost.ca

REMINDER - PD Day - Fri. April 24th

Friday April 22nd is a PD Day. The school will be closed to students while the staff is involved in professional development activities.

Outdoor Play Guidelines

This week, students in grades 1–8 gathered for an assembly focused on ensuring everyone stays safe and has fun during outdoor play. We reviewed our "Right Place, Right Play" guidelines, reminding students that the blacktop is reserved exclusively for four square, wall ball, and basketball in their designated zones. All other ball games, including soccer, football, and catch, belong on the open field area. Most importantly, we have asked that all ball games come to a complete stop from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM daily, as our blacktop becomes a high-traffic zone for student pick-up. We truly appreciate your partnership in reminding your child to pause these activities until 3:30 PM to keep our dismissal safe for everyone.

The Environmental Leadership Learning Centre is Officially Open at ALX!

We are thrilled to announce that today, Friday, April 17, HDSB officially cut the ribbon on the Environmental Leadership Learning Centre (ELLC)!

As the home for HDSB’s Nature's Near program, this centre represents more than just a location—it is a living classroom.  Over the past several months, we have watched this space grow from a vision into a thriving hub for sustainability and hands-on learning.

Our students have been at the heart of many developments.  From getting our hands dirty with tree planting, watching life begin with the salmon egg hatching and testing our culinary skills in sustainable cook-offs. This centre is a reflection of our commitment to SDGs and to the leadership potential of every student at Alexander’s.

April 24, 2026

It has been a fantastic week at Alexander’s as our halls buzz with the energy of spring and exciting preparations. Our students are currently pouring their hearts into rehearsals for the upcoming June 4th spring concert, while our dedicated School Council is busily organizing the final details for our highly anticipated annual Fun Fair on May 28th. On the athletic front, relay tryouts are well underway with great displays of speed and spirit, and we are all looking forward to the upcoming Grade 4 to 7 field trip to Bronte Provincial Park, an outdoor adventure led by the HDSB Nature’s Near Program and our very own ALX Green Team.

Have a great weekend.

Hold and Secure Drill

Yesterday, our school successfully conducted a Hold and Secure drill as part of our ongoing commitment to the HDSB Safe Schools protocols.  To ensure that our students, staff, and visitors are fully prepared for any situation, we practice these drills several times throughout the year. A Hold and Secure is initiated when there is a potential threat or emergency outside in the community, rather than inside the building.

What happens during a Hold and Secure?

  • All exterior doors are locked.

  • Entry to and exit from the building is restricted.

  • Inside the school, all classes and activities continue as normal.

For those parents and guardians who arrived at the school during the drill,  thank you for your patience and waiting to pick up your child until the drill was officially completed.

Get Ready to Jump! Jump Rope for Heart is Coming

Our school is thrilled to announce that we are officially kicking off Jump Rope for Heart on May 22nd! We are joining schools across the country to support the Heart & Stroke Foundation in their mission to fund lifesaving heart and brain research.

How You Can Help

We need your support to reach our school's fundraising goal!

Thank you for helping us support such a great cause. Let’s get skipping!

Beautiful Connections in Grade One:

Over the past several weeks during our Social Studies learning block, the Grade One students explored Beautiful Connections by learning about relationships within First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures—especially connections to land, family, and community.

Students practiced active listening and thoughtful questioning during discussions, and engaged with diverse texts—many of which were recently added to our school library—to learn about different histories, cultures, and lived experiences. They also shared their own ideas and feelings, making connections to themes of diversity, inclusion, and respect. It has been wonderful to see their understanding and empathy continue to grow.

Primary Choir Update

We are excited to share that a Google Classroom has been set up for the Primary Choir! This online space allows students to access their songs and practice learning the words from home.

Using Google Classroom will help reduce paper use, and since our songs are from Music Play, students can also practice both the lyrics and melodies more effectively.

Primary Choir students are encouraged to log in and check their Google Classroom to find the links to the songs there.

Happy Singing!

Spring Clothing Drive

Spring Clothing Drive from April 13-May 1st! Only Spring and Summer clothing please, volunteers will come around to collect and count. We have 173 items so far and Ms. Edwards' class is in the lead with 34 items!

Grade 6 Warplane Museum

The Grade 6 Warplane Museum was a big success. Students learned about the Bernoulli' principles in action with mini lessons on drag, weight, thrust and lift. They were able to see this  through the take off of two Douglas C47 Dakota troops, which the Canadian Parachute regiment would have used to drop into France on the night of June 5th, 1944 during the Second World War.

Students were also given time to learn about other notable aircraft such as the Lancaster Bomber, which was built locally in Malton, now the Pearson airport area. Others included Cold War era aircraft such as the F104 Starfighter, F5A Tiger II, and a guided tour of a DeHavilland Buffalo transport plane used in a Canadian led UN operation in Syria.  See some of the pics from the trip: Gr. 6 Warplane Heritage Museum

Chaos Collision and Mad Mustangs are coming to ALX!

Chaos Collision and Mad Mustangs are two bands of Grade 7/8 students from Sir Ernest MacMillan Public School. Though these specific bands were only formed in September, many of these students have been playing together for three years, building an incredible bond and sound. While in the process of learning their favourite songs and writing/recording original music, they realized just how much they love to play together, and decided to take a concert on the road! These bands will be playing the final show of their FIRST EVER city-wide tour for students in grades 3 to 8 at Alexander's on May 12th, having played for 7 schools across Burlington. They will cap off the year with four released songs and a headlining set at MusicFest, a multi-stage music festival taking place at Sir Ernest MacMillan on June 3rd. Keep an eye out on @macmillanhdsb on Instagram for more information about these amazing musicians!

Safety Village

Our kindergarten classes went on their first field trip this week. They were very excited for their school bus ride to the Halton Safety Village. The students learned about community safety, specifically what to do to cross the road safely. Students also got to apply their learning while completing a scavenger hunt through the miniature village. Safety Village Trip

Our Jump Rope for Heart Kick-Off is happening on May 22!

We have officially kicked off our Jump Rope for Heart event. We’re excited to get active, learn healthy habits, and raise funds in support of Heart & Stroke. Alexander's Tchoukball Team

The Alexander's Tchoukball Team played in a tournament last week at Charles R. Beaudoin. Unfortunately, the team got off to a slow start and couldn't recover, losing their opening match against John William Boich by a score of 12-7. Next, our Coyotes played a solid match against Florence Meares and were narrowly outscored 12-11. In their final game the team lost a heart-breaker against River Oaks, falling short by a single point, losing 9-8. Congratulations to all team members for a great season - Alyaina, Anderson, Eloise, Jaaqob, Kaius, Lucas, Maya, Nate, Nolan, Olivia, Rhys & Saihaj.

Missing Team Jerseys

Alexander's Team Jerseys - Please return any team jerseys immediately following the completion of the season for each sport. We are missing a number of our new jerseys that were purchased at the beginning of the school year. There are many upcoming events and are in need of all of the jerseys. If your child is still in possession of a jersey, please return it to the school as soon as possible. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

Grade 4 students attended a field trip to Mountsberg to learn about habitats. Students explored the outdoors with hands-on activities, such as pond dipping where we found shells, water skaters, and snails. Students got up close and personal with native birds, learning how hawks and owls are perfectly adapted to survive as predators in their environments. We trekked through the woods to compare different ecosystems, observing what living things need to survive. a few pictures!

Why do we participate in Jump?

While research may be hard to see, its impact is impossible to ignore. Her research has made it possible for infants to safely receive heart transplants from donors with different blood types—saving countless lives.

Watch this video (https://youtu.be/c-mc5fc1i-c) to see Dr. West meet the children and families whose lives have been changed by her discovery and to hear what her work means for their hopes for a healthier future.

Who Jump Rope for Heart helps

Our school is thrilled to participate in Jump Rope for Heart this year to raise funds for families like Sophie and Mia’s.
