| 2/23/2026 | Black History Month | Today's Black Brilliance info is about Lucie and Thorton Blackburn. They escaped slavery in Kentucky and settled in Detroit. However, their former owner tracked them down there and tried to return them to slavery. The Blackburns were able to make it to Canada, where the Canadian Courts defended them. This was seen as a symbol of Upper Canada’s role as a safe haven for Black refugees. The Blackburns settled in Toronto in the 1830s and worked hard to end slavery and help other Underground Railroad refugees settle in Canada. | Kilgour, A. MacIntyre |
