Personal Technology Use

Personal Technology Use (PPM 128)

In accordance with PPM 128 from the Ontario Ministry of Education, we will continue to implement a “No Personal Device” initiative at Gladys Speers. All students must keep personal devices in their backpacks at all times; unless a medical exemption is in place.  Personal devices include cellphones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, and other handheld internet-enabled devices.

We will be taking a progressive discipline approach with students who are having difficulty adopting the new expectations. The following steps will be taken:

First Time: Student will be given a verbal reminder of the expected practice will be asked to put cell phone away.

Second Time: Student will be directed to put cell phone in a designated safe space within the classroom, or in the office for the remainder of the day.

Third Time: Family will be contacted and students will temporarily lose the privilege of having their cell phone at school (will either have to leave it at home, or keep it in the office).

Families that need to reach out to their child during the day to coordinate alternative pick up arrangements, appointments or the drop off of forgotten lunches and other items can contact the main office (905-827-4841). A phone is also available there for student use as needed. If there is an emergency and you need to contact your child, the best way is through the office to ensure privacy and provide any student support that might be needed.

Thank you in advance for your help and support with managing this PPM with your child.
